So I’m driving down to Ohio first thing in the morning to attend the funeral of my wife’s cousin. It’s a bit short notice, and I’ve known the wheel bearing has been going bad for about a week. Well, now I better do something about it.

Kinja'd!!!

Hub assembly is off, now to remove the CV axle and replace it since I’ve already done all of the disassembly required to get at it, and it only costs $60. I did the other side in December, and getting the axle out of the front diff was the hardest part, mostly due to space issues. If I had a lift it would be super easy.

Side note: The SaaBlazer is 8 years old with 100k Wisconsin miles on it. Not a single bolt has been difficult to remove. Same story with the other side. Barely any rust on any of the fasteners. Voodoo??

Have you had to replace the outer tie rod ends? I did both on our ‘04 Envoy (115,000 miles of Iowa miles) a few months ago and it took me 4 hours and nearly giving birth to my colon to get the nuts loose.

The correct name is ‘TrollBlazer’. I see them in the most bizarre places. One frequently around our city. I like car-spotting things that virtually nobody else cares about. How many did they make all told?

It was a project I (foolishly) started after all the local stores were closed on a Friday night and I had an alignment appointment first thing the next morning.

Those were the first to get replaced. No issues with ANY bolts. I’m at a total loss for an explanation. Hardly any rust underneath too.

I miss the wild SUVs from my woodward days. A friend of mine used to have a saturn VUE non-redline with the honda V6. He tuned that thing hard and it was a beast of a saturn.......until the supercharged 6.0L trollblazer came in and beat him up every night.

Good times.

I see them all over the place, so I don’t think they’re rare. Have you ever seen the Isuzu version? Unicorn!

Because GM.

Older Dodge stuff I’ve worked on comes apart pretty easy too. Oh and my Ford, minus the pitman arm.

All the Japanese stuff though? It hates WI winters. It hates salt. It hates coming apart.

Its gotta be a regional thing. I remember seeing the Saabs regularly when I lived in Appleton. Since moving to NC, I haven’t seen one. But there are Isuzu Ascenders everywhere.

As a rust belt native, thats pretty rare for any car that hasnt been undercoated. Also once stuff starts to rust get some PB Blaster (Id recommend SeaFoam Deep Creep over PB but its harder to find). WD40 wont do anything against rust.

I sprayed a little penetrating lube on the upper ball joint fully expecting it to be a fight. The bolt came right off and the joint separated immediately. Went back together even smoother.

So far all of my GM stuff has had no issues with rusty fasteners. My wife’s old Saturn was super easy to work on, and I never fought a fastener. My Sierra hasn’t needed any maintenance after 5 years and 80k miles, but everything looks fairly rust free underneath. My Fiat never got old enough to find out before I sold it for the SaaBlazer.

So much envy, lets just say i did not have the same luck with a 92 accord. It involved a BFH and breaker bars.

I’ve had the opposite experience but granted I only had one GM before all jap cars.
